before titling property jointly with your life partner in Florida. In other states, it may not be an issue, but if you saw the conflicts which Jonas has resolved or attempted to resolve over the years in Florida you would appreciate this suggestion.
If
you and your partner already own jointly titled property, show your
partner that you love her or him by scheduling an appointment with an
attorney (or each of you are entitled to your own counsel) to protect both of your interests. Although each of you are
entitled to separate representation, if retaining Jonas Urba was a mutual decision then Jonas will confirm this in writing and will remind you that he will not keep secrets from either one of you. Should
one of you share information with him, he informs both partners during
the initial meeting that he treats you as a committed couple who are willing to disclose anything relayed to an attorney to each other.
Please be
responsible. If you make written agreements with each other, those
agreements can include language that each of you promises to resolve
disputes out of the courtroom. Such agreements show each other that
you love one another. Court action is expensive, time-consuming, and
uncertain. Written agreements contain costs, specify time periods, and
provide language regarding when and where the dispute will finally be
resolved.
In addition to being licensed to practice law in three states, Jonas Urba is a Florida Supreme Court Certified Circuit Civil and County Court Mediator. In such role, his job is to help both same-sex partners reach a mutual resolution to any dispute they may have with each other.
